Australia immigration

While the likes of the UK and other countries around the world continue to receive unfavourable press, regarding immigration policies, there is no doubt that the Australia immigration process is one which many countries are now aspiring to as a system which works and ultimately gives migrants and the Australian economy exactly what they both need. So how does the Australian immigration system work?

Background to Australia immigration

While there is some debate as to whether politicians in Australia are as “tough” on immigration as they appear to be in the press there is no doubt that the Australian points system is one which works and one which can be amended and adjusted at the “drop of a hat”. The UK government is now looking to adopt a similar policy with regards immigration but what can you expect when looking to emigrate to Australia and what is the process?

Visas available in Australia

There are six main visas available to those looking to move to Australia which include :-

Skilled visa

This is one of the more popular visas in Australia and relates to skilled workers who have particular experience which is of interest to the Australian business market.

Working holiday visa

This particular visa is available to those under 31 years of age, looking to live and work in Australia up to a maximum of two years.

Travel visa

This is your standard travel visa which is required for those looking to take a holiday or possibly a short business trip to Australia.

Business visa

This particular visa is aimed at the entrepreneurial and business executive market and those looking to move to pastures new in Australia.

Family visa

For those who have family or relatives in Australia this is an option if you’re looking to move to the country on a long-term basis.

Fiance /spouse visa

For those who have recently been married or engaged to an Australian or eligible New Zealand citizen this is the specific visa they require.

So how does the Australia immigration system work?

Before we go into detail about the more popular Australian visas available it is worth noting how the system works and what you can expect when applying to move to Australia, for whatever reason. In simple terms you will apply for a specific visa which will suit your requirements, experience and skills and upon consideration of your specific details you will be awarded a point score by the Australian government.

The point score is related to your skills, age, English language ability, specific work experience, spouses skills as well as whether your specific employment skills are required at that moment in time by the Australian business arena. There are also various bonus points available although the above criteria cover the main points scoring areas. After you are informed of your overall point score you will then be able to decide which particular visa you may be eligible for and then the application process will begin.

It is worth noting that there are two stages to the application process, after you have received your point score, and by no means is acceptance into Australia guaranteed at this moment. As you may have read on the forum, the overall application process for Australia can take up to 18 months (and indeed many people have reported longer timescales). Unless you are determined to move to Australia, for whatever reason, your patience will be tested to the full during the application process.

Visa applications

We will now take a look at some of the more popular Australian visas available and how you go about applying for acceptance through the Australia immigration system :-

Australian skilled visa

The skilled visa is by far and away the more popular available in Australia as effectively allows people with certain employment skills to relocate “lock stock and barrel” to Australia. There are various subsectors for the Australian skilled visa which include:-

Skilled – Independent

This is by far and away the more popular of the Australian visas available and allows those living overseas, who can offer a particular skill or experience to the Australian economy, to move to their new homeland.

Skilled – Sponsored

This particular visa is for those who have connections in Australia, whether this be family or Australian State or Territory authorities, although there is still a need to offer a skill/work experience which may be in short supply in Australia.

Skilled – Regional Sponsored

The regional sponsored visa is one which requires the support of a participating state government or a family member who lives in a “designated area” of Australia. This particular visa may be used to attract certain skills to a certain area of the country.

Skilled – Regional

For those who have been living in Australia on the above Skilled – Regional Sponsored visa this is the path towards permanent residency in Australia although again there are various conditions attached to a successful application.

Regional – Sponsored Migration Scheme

This is a scheme which allows employers in certain areas of Australia to sponsor migrant workers to come to the country to fill particular job vacancies. Due to the broad spectrum of job vacancies under this particular scheme it is only applicable to certain areas of Australia.

Skills Matching Visa

While for many people, a failure to reach the specified points score for a particular visa will mean the end of their application to move to Australia, the skills matching visa is a potential alternative route. For those who have failed the point score they will require the nomination of an Australian State, Territory authority or employer for further consideration.

Labour Agreements

Over time certain areas of the Australian economy have been found to be lacking in the number of skilled workers with a particular experience. This labour agreement scheme allows employers to bring over a specified number of migrant workers to fill certain employment position. These employment positions can be either temporary or permanent.

Graduate – Skilled Visa

This particular visa offers an interesting alternative for foreign students who have experienced education in Australia and may have family in the country. It makes sense to look to employ and use the skills which these particular students have gathered in Australia from the Austrian education system.

Australian family visa

The family visa system is one which is growing in popularity as more and more Europeans and expats from around the world gain permanent residency in Australia and look to bring over their family in due course. There are a number of different areas of interest which include:-

Spouse and partner migration

This is your most basic form of family visa whereby the applicant is either married to, engaged to or dependent upon a partner who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or somebody from New Zealand who is eligible to the same rights in Australia.

Child migration

This particular option offers children the chance to be with their Australian “family” if they are a dependent child, orphan or adopted child of an Australian citizen. In simple terms, if your parents are permanent residents of Australia then there should be little difficulty with their child or dependent receiving similar status.

Parent migration

This is the alternative to the child migration system and allows parents of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens to move to Australia to be with their children.

Other family migration

As the social make-up of the worldwide population continues to change on an ongoing basis, this particular migration visa is a “catchall” option. It relates to people who have age dependent relatives, aging relatives or carers of Australian citizens, residents of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizens. It allows those involved to apply for permanent residency in Australia and the various rights which go with this.

Australian business visa

As the worldwide economy continues to blend together the Australian business visa has become more and more popular with companies expanding overseas and the Internet opening an array of different opportunities for the workplace today. The Australian business visa system is split into four specific categories which are:-

Business owner

This relates to people who have their own business or own part of a business.

Senior executive

This particular option relates to senior executives of major businesses which have exposure in Australia.

Investors

The investor category is becoming more and more popular as people look to expand overseas and covers those willing to invest in businesses and people in Australia.

Business talent

In an attempt to attract the best business brains available, the Australian government has introduced this particular program for people who have sponsorship from a State or Territory government.

There are two specific ways to gain entry to Australia for those involved in business which include applying for a business skills (provisional) visa which is valid for four years and allows the person involved to establish their own credentials regarding their business or their investment activities. If eligible after the four-year period is up, they will be able to apply for a business skills (residence) visa which will give them different rights in the country.

The other fast-track way to gain entry into Australia is the business talent visa (which is detailed above) and is specific to those of an extremely high calibre who can offer certain skills and experience to the Australian economy.

Welcome To Australia

Australia officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the continental mainland (the world's smallest),the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighboring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the southeast.

For some 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established.

On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22.0 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

Australia is a developed country, with a prosperous multicultural society and has excellent results in many international comparisons of national performance such as health care, life expectancy, quality of life, human development, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australian cities routinely rank among the world's highest in terms of cultural offerings and quality of life. It is a member of the United Nations, G-20 major economies, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, and the WTO.
